  • Unlock the Facts: World Hepatitis Day Q&A

World Hepatitis Day is around the corner, and we are here to answer your questions surrounding this disease. With multiple different variants, and different methods of transmission, staying knowledgeable on the disease can help keep you safe and prepared for the future!   Can Hepatitis be Cured? Depending on the diagnosis of hepatitis, the curability varies. For hepatitis type A and C, the disease can be cured. Though type B and E are not curable, they are typically suppressible with medication.   How can I Prevent Hepatitis? Prevention for hepatitis largely comes in the form of vaccines. For hepatitis types A and B you can get vaccinated to help prevent the disease. However, if you have already contracted hepatitis, or are looking to prevent type C, D, or E, vaccinations will not be effective. When it comes to other methods of prevention, avoid using shared razors or syringes, wash your hands often, and use protection during intercourse.   What Differentiates the Types of Hepatitis? Hepatitis is segmented into its different variants by letter, that being type A-E. However, type A, B, and C are the most prevalent and common forms of the disease, and typically the only variants you will run into. Type A: Typically spread through contaminated food, as well as unsafe intercourse. If vaccinated, symptoms are relatively mild and most make a full recovery. Type B: Spread through exposure to bodily fluids and can result in more serious infection if not vaccinated against. (Vaccine is available for type B as well as type A). Type C: Transmitted mostly through already infected blood, there is no vaccination available for the disease. Type D: Sprouts from type B, thus taking the type B vaccination can help to prevent type D as well. Type E: Similar to type A as it is mostly spread through contaminated food or water. Right now, there is not an FDA approved vaccination, but it is in the works.   Is Hepatitis a Deadly Disease? Hepatitis types B, C, and D all have the possibility of developing into cirrhosis or liver cancer if left untreated. This has the possibility of becoming fatal as a result. However, there are preventative, and effective medications to take if you were to become infected.   How Tria can Help – For anyone who is looking for guidance on their medications, vaccinations, or what path they should take in relation to your health, Tria Health is here to help. • Mind-Body Connection: How Mental Health Shapes Your Physical Well-Being

Slowly but surely, society has started to recognize the value of mental health. As a result, this has led to substantial discoveries in the field, one of these being mental health’s relationship to our physical well-being. Prioritizing your mental health can be one of the most essential aspects to ensure your quality of life, and understanding the physical effects of mental health can highlight its importance and help you be your best self!   Physical Side Effects of Mental Health Conditions Mental health conditions can often extend beyond the emotional realm, manifesting in a variety of physical effects. Some examples of mental health conditions and their side effects are as follows: Anxiety – An incredibly common condition that results in several physical side effects. Depending on the severity, some of these include an irregular heartbeat, trembling, stomachache, insomnia, dry mouth, excessive sweating, and etcetera. Depression – Another relatively common mental health condition, in which side effects such as largely decreased energy level, possible development of eating disorders, issues surrounding too little sleep, or excessive sleep, are the most common. Bipolar Disorder  – Side effects often resemble depression symptoms, causing similar negative impacts. However, bipolar disorder can also lead to the possibility of manic episodes, which can result in hallucinations and increased risk of self-harm. Eating Disorders  – These disorders, unfortunately, are a perfect [AT4]  example of how your physical health can be impacted via a mental health condition [AT5]  . Side effects include substantial undereating/overeating, and this can lead to anorexia, bulimia, obesity, and general function impairment.   Mental Health’s Impact on Chronic Conditions Diabetes  – Significant risk factors for diabetes come largely from two mental health conditions, that being depression and schizophrenia. Anti-psychosis medications have been shown to significantly impact weight gain, so if you are diagnosed with any of these conditions, make sure to consider the relationship between these factors and watch your health carefully. Heart Disease  – There are a variety of different mental health conditions [AT7]   [DT8]  that vastly increase your stress hormones, and as a result, this can develop abnormal rhythms in the heart. Other mental health condition medications have also shown a link to similar abnormalities related to the heart. Arthritis  – Due to some medication having anti-inflammatory properties (primarily anti-psychosis medication), some people living with mental health conditions have shown to have a decreased rate of arthritis. Respiratory Problems  – Studies have shown that those suffering from any generic respiratory condition are more likely on average to have a mental health condition as well. Three out of four people with these respiratory issues on average have either anxiety or depression. The practices and self-care associated with these conditions can occasionally lead to panic and/or asthma attacks as a result.   How Tria Can Help – Tria Health takes a personalized, hands-on approach to improving your overall well-being, focusing on sustainable changes to manage mental health and chronic conditions. • Surprising Benefits of Weight Loss You Didn’t Know About!

Anyone thinking about losing weight often links it to common health goals. You might have a target weight, want to improve your overall health, or just feel the need to make a change. These are all great goals. However, knowing the specific health benefits can be a strong motivator for making big and lasting changes in your weight loss journey. What are the Benefits of Weight Loss? Given the especially well-known weight loss community, entering the space can be intimidating. However, long-term goals are what enable success, and the following benefits lay out a future anyone would be in favor of working towards.   Arthritis Weight Loss Benefits Weight Loss can specifically target many different forms of arthritis, largely those that target load barring joints. In terms of self-care, weight loss has been found to be effective for long-term relief, specifically for Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Gout. However, if you are considering an exercise regimen to address this, it is typically recommended you avoid high impact routines such as running. Fibromyalgia Weight Loss Benefits Similarly to Arthritis, fibromyalgia can cause relatively consistent, chronic pain. For those who are attempting to prevent fibromyalgia, or provide relief for their existing condition, weight loss has been suggested as a prevalent combatant to fibromyalgia related pain. Mental Health Weight Loss Benefits Studies have also shown that weight loss can result in an improvement in mental state. This not only includes possible resolved struggles relating to depressive conditions, but improvements in memory and attention span compared to those who did not engage in weight loss measures. Migraine Weight Loss Benefits Specifically, those struggling with obesity are more likely to suffer from migraines. As a result, weight loss treatment has proven to be an effective method to either lessen the migraine intensity, and/or reduce their frequency.   In addition to the benefits previously mentioned, adopting a healthier lifestyle paves the way for a brighter future. Finding a plan that suits you can be challenging, but it's crucial to consult with a clinician to ensure your exercise routine and diet are both safe and effective. Also, envision a more comfortable living scenario as your end goal—this can serve as the motivation you need to begin your journey or seek out available resources! How Does Tria Help? • Heatwave Hacks: Safety Tips for Keeping Cool

Avoiding the effects of extreme heat is essential to maintaining your health during these intense summer temperatures, and one that is often forgotten. Every person can react to these conditions very differently, so it’s important to plan additional precautions to take care of yourself. However, we are here to help you not only take the necessary steps to stay safe, but also enjoy the warm weather! Tips to Keep Cool for the Summer Though the effects of extreme heat can seem intimidating to manage, there are many at home solutions to manage the heat and keep you enjoying the outdoors. The following are some simple precautions that everyone should follow: o   Keeping yourself hydrated is essential to preventing any extreme heat related injuries. o   Take advantage of cooling rags to maintain a lower body temperature. o   Fans become ineffective when used in excessive heat, don’t use them as your only way to cool off. o   Never stay outside alone, in case of an adverse reaction to the weather, it is important to have someone capable of contacting the help necessary. Keep in mind that during extreme weather conditions, it simply cannot be safe for some with chronic conditions to be outside. Make sure to stay updated on local weather coverage to ensure your and others safety! Who is Most at Risk? While dealing with the extreme heat can be difficult for most of the population, those with chronic medical conditions typically suffer the most. If you are diagnosed with any of the following conditions, it is important you stay cautious, or reach out to a medical professional for more information: o   Obesity: Individuals with obesity are more susceptible to heat illness, as their bodies tend to retain more heat. o   Cardiovascular Related Conditions (CRC’s): Increased temperatures put a lot more strain on regulatory systems, worsening the effects of CRC’s and putting you at a higher risk for heat strokes, etc. o   Mental Health Related Conditions: Due to many medication side effects, it is important you get in contact with a pharmacist to see if you are at risk. Some mental health conditions such as dementia can also worsen your judgement in an emergency, putting you at worse risk. o   Diabetes: Those diagnosed with diabetes get dehydrated much quicker than those without it, this makes hydrating way more important. Some diabetes complications also damage blood vessels and nerves, which makes it harder to regulate your body temperature. Insulin use can also be much more difficult when dealing with extreme heat. If you are suffering from any of these conditions, please take the steps necessary to ensure your safety, and keep cool. Tria Health is Here to Help Managing a chronic condition, especially in the extreme summer temperatures can be incredibly hard to manage. Not to mention how important it is to consider the side effects of your medication when dealing with these temperatures. • How to Start Using SMART Goals

Some of the most common health goals include losing weight, eating healthier, and exercising more. All of these can be achieved by creating goals and setting out to accomplish them with the right mindset. The Key to Success The best method to help you be successful in completing your resolution is the SMART goals method. Learn how to set a SMART goal: S – Specific: This will be your mission statement. What will be accomplished? What actions will you take? M – Measurable: What data will measure the goal? (How much? How well?) A – Achievable: Is the goal doable? Do you have the necessary skills and resources? R – Relevant: How does the goal align with the broader goals? Why is the result important? T – Time-Bound: What is the time frame for accomplishing the goal? Here is an example of using the SMART goals method if you want to start making diet modifications: S – Specific: I want to start eating healthier foods to help improve my blood sugar and overall health. M – Measurable: I will add 2 servings of vegetables to my meals 5 times a week. A – Achievable: I can make this achievable by buying frozen vegetables to decrease preparation time. R – Relevant: This will be easy since I can microwave the frozen vegetables. T – Time-Bound: Over the next two weeks, I will work on incorporating 1 serving of vegetables to my lunch and dinner. Then, at the end of the two weeks I will be eating 2 servings a day. Setting and achieving small goals add up over time! Don’t feel like you must set and achieve BIG goals when you’re trying to make progress. Surround Yourself with Good Support Achieving your goals may be difficult if you do not have people in your corner to encourage you during this time. If you tend to doubt easily and put yourself down, reach out to your support group for encouragement. Be kind to yourself and allow yourself to fail and get back up again. Try using some of these phrases to encourage yourself: “That was a bad decision, but a good learning opportunity. What’s my next step?” “Of course, my muscles are sore. They’re supposed to be. It will get easier.” “Making it through today is going to really build my confidence!” Remember that everyone’s health journey will look different! It won’t be easy, and challenges will arise, but with the right support and mindset, you can achieve your goals. • The Perils of Relying on ChatGPT and GoogleMD for Medical Advice

In an age where artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated into various aspects of our lives, including healthcare, it's crucial to understand the limitations and risks associated with relying solely on AI-powered tools like ChatGPT and GoogleMD for managing medical conditions. Recent studies have shed light on concerning inaccuracies and shortcomings in these platforms, highlighting the potential dangers they pose to users' health. Two independent studies1 have revealed alarming findings regarding the reliability of ChatGPT. In both studies, ChatGPT demonstrated a propensity for providing incomplete or incorrect responses, and in some cases, even fabricated references to support its answers. First Study: Inaccurate and Incomplete Information In the first study, researchers compared ChatGPT's responses to questions about medications with information provided by a drug information service for pharmacists. Shockingly, ChatGPT failed to provide a response or offered inaccurate and incomplete information in a staggering 74% of cases. For instance, when asked about potential drug interactions between a prescription treatment for COVID-19 and a high blood pressure medicine, ChatGPT stated that there were no interactions, disregarding the known potential for increased effects of the high blood pressure medicine due to CYP3A4 inhibition. Even more concerning was the discovery that ChatGPT fabricated references to support its responses, leading users to nonexistent studies and misleading information. Second Study: Missing Crucial Information In the second study, researchers assessed ChatGPT's ability to identify medication side effects. They found that ChatGPT consistently missed at least half of the established side effects for 26 out of 30 different medications. This glaring deficiency in recognizing crucial information about medication side effects could have serious implications for users who rely on ChatGPT for guidance in managing their health conditions. Can ChatGPT Replace Physicians? The short answer is no they cannot. In an article published by the National Library of Medicine, Jan Homolak states that “…they are notoriously bad at context and nuance (8) – two things critical for safe and effective patient care, which requires the implementation of medical knowledge, concepts, and principles in real-world settings”. It's essential for users to approach AI-powered medical advice platforms with caution and skepticism, recognizing their limitations and seeking confirmation from reliable sources, such as healthcare professionals or reputable medical websites. In conclusion, while AI technologies hold promise in revolutionizing healthcare, including the provision of medical advice and information, users must exercise caution and critical thinking when relying on platforms like ChatGPT and GoogleMD. The risks associated with inaccuracies and fabrications in AI-generated responses underscore the importance of seeking guidance from qualified healthcare professionals for managing medical conditions effectively and safely. • Unveiling the Salty Six: Sneaky Sodium Sources Hiding in Your Diet

In the quest for healthier eating, many of us focus on reducing calories, cutting out sugar, or increasing our intake of fruits and vegetables. However, there's one sneaky culprit that often flies under the radar: sodium. Most Americans consume more sodium than the recommended daily intake, which is less than 2,300mg. Excessive sodium intake is linked to various health issues, including high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. To shed light on this often-overlooked aspect of nutrition, let's explore the "Salty Six" – common foods that are surprisingly high in sodium. The Salty Six Let’s get into it! The American Heart Association says that there are 6 popular food items that are high in sodium and that you need to avoid: 1. Bread and Baked Goods: While bread and baked goods may not taste salty, they can be significant sources of sodium in your diet. This often stems from the use of baking soda, baking powder, and salt in the baking process. Additionally, certain types of bread, such as bagels and pretzels, tend to be higher in sodium. Reading labels and opting for whole grain varieties can help you make smarter choices. 2. Pizza: Who doesn't love a piping hot slice of pizza? Unfortunately, indulging in this favorite comfort food can also mean consuming a hefty dose of sodium. From the cheese and sauce to the cured meats and dough, all the components of pizza can contribute to its sodium content. Enjoying pizza in moderation and opting for toppings like veggies instead of processed meats can help keep sodium levels in check. 3. Sandwiches and Burgers: Sandwiches and burgers are classic go-to options for a quick and satisfying meal, but they can also harbor hidden sodium. From the bread and condiments to the fillings and toppings, the sodium content of these handheld delights can add up quickly. Choosing whole grain bread, lean proteins, and fresh vegetables can help balance out the sodium content of your sandwich or burger. 4. Processed and Cured Meats: The allure of processed meats like bacon, sausage, and deli meats is undeniable. However, these savory delights are often loaded with sodium. Whether it's from the curing process or added during preparation, processed meats can significantly contribute to your daily sodium intake. Opting for leaner cuts or lower-sodium alternatives can help mitigate this risk. 5. Canned Soups and Broths: Convenience is a major selling point of canned soups and broths, but convenience comes at a cost – namely, high sodium content. Many commercially available soups and broths contain staggering amounts of sodium to enhance flavor and preserve freshness. Choosing low-sodium or homemade versions allows you to enjoy the comfort of soup without the sodium overload. 6. Burritos and Tacos: There’s no denying that burritos and tacos are a household favorite. However, taco toppings and burrito fillings hold a ton of sodium. When picking your toppings or fillings for your next meal, try using less cheese and more vegetables. Tips to Reduce Sodium Intake The CDC provides tips on how to reduce your sodium intake. Here are just a few from the list: Buy fresh, frozen, or canned vegetables with no salt or sauce added. Choose packaged foods labeled “low sodium,” “reduced sodium,” or “no salt added” when available. When buying prepared meals, look for those with less than 600 milligrams (mg) of sodium per meal, which is the upper limit set by the Food and Drug Administration for a meal or main dish to be labeled “healthy.” Check the number of servings per container. Eat more fruits and vegetables. When eating out, split a meal with a friend or family member. Order vegetables with no salt added or fruit as a side item. Check out the full list here!
