Start Using SMART Goals in 2023

Tis the season for New Year’s resolutions! Some of the most common New Year's resolutions include losing weight, eating healthier, and exercising more. All these resolutions can be achieved by creating goals and setting out to accomplish them with the right mindset.

The Key to Success

The best method to help you be successful in completing your resolution is the SMART goals method. Learn how to set a SMART goal:

S – Specific: This will be your mission statement. What will be accomplished? What actions will you take?

M – Measurable: What data will measure the goal? (How much? How well?)

A – Achievable: Is the goal doable? Do you have the necessary skills and resources?

R – Relevant: How does the goal align with the broader goals? Why is the result important?

T – Time-Bound: What is the time frame for accomplishing the goal?

Here is an example of using the SMART goals method if you want to start making diet modifications:

S – Specific: I want to start eating healthier foods to help improve my blood sugar and overall health.

M – Measurable: I will add 2 servings of vegetables to my meals 5 times a week.

A – Achievable: I can make this achievable by buying frozen vegetables to decrease preparation time.

R – Relevant: This will be easy since I can microwave the frozen vegetables.

T – Time-Bound: Over the next two weeks, I will work on incorporating 1 serving of vegetables to my lunch and dinner. Then, at the end of the two weeks I will be eating 2 servings a day.

Setting and achieving small goals add up over time! Don’t feel like you must set and achieve BIG goals when you’re trying to make progress.

Surround Yourself with Good Support

Achieving your goals may be difficult if you do not have people in your corner to encourage you during this time. If you tend to doubt easily and put yourself down, reach out to your support group for encouragement. Be kind to yourself and allow yourself to fail and get back up again. Try using some of these phrases to encourage yourself:

  • “That was a bad decision, but a good learning opportunity. What’s my next step?”

  • “Of course my muscles are sore. They’re supposed to be. It will get easier.”

  • “Making it through today is going to really build my confidence!”

Remember that everyone’s health journey will look different! It won’t be easy, and challenges will arise, but with the right support and mindset, you can achieve your goals.
